The Quran Doesn’t Care About Tawheed

Before Christmas I wrote a post about Surah 2:62 and Surah 3:85 and how they contradict each other.  I invited Muslims to harmonize these passages.  Luckily I was able to find the work of elite Islamic apologist Yusha Evans.  He explains how these verses are reconciled in the above video.

Just for a brief recap, here are the verses.

Those who believe, and those who are Jewish, and the Christians, and the Sabeans—any who believe in God and the Last Day, and act righteously—will have their reward with their Lord; they have nothing to fear, nor will they grieve.

– Surah 2:62

Whoever seeks other than Islam as a religion, it will not be accepted from him, and in the Hereafter he will be among the losers.

– Surah 3:85

Yusha Evans talks about these verses.  What is his answer?  Why the doctrine of abrogation of course.  The verse about the exclusivity of Islam comes second and therefore abrogates Surah 2:62.  I suppose that means that before Surah 3 was revealed, Trinitarianism was good enough in the eyes of Allah.  Now you need Tawheed.

Let’s think about this for a bit.  Before Surah 3:85 Trinitarians or other forms of non-Tawheed were good enough for salvation.  This means that all of the Church Fathers are in heaven.  Even Yusha Evans would have to concede that these Church Fathers lived very moral lives, even though they preached the Trinity which was permitted at that time.

Even Church Fathers who defended the Trinity such as St. Athanasius of Alexandria, St. Augustine of Hippo, St. Hilary of Poitiers, and the Cappadocian Fathers are in Jannah with Muslims like Abraham, Jesus, Muhammad and Alexander the Great.

Now, Christians who live after Surah 3 are in trouble.  Trinitarianism is no longer good enough to get into heaven because Surah 3:85 has abrogated Surah 2:62; at least according to Yusha Evans.  If you look at any list of the chronological order of the Surahs, Surah 3 comes after Surah 2.  However if we look at some of the last Surahs revealed, we see Surah 5.  In this Surah we see an interesting verse.

Those who believe, and the Jews, and the Sabians, and the Christians—whoever believes in God and the Last Day, and does what is right—they have nothing to fear, nor shall they grieve.

– Surah 5:69

This is saying the exact same thing as Surah 2:62.  This verse comes after Surah 3:85.  This means that Surah 5:69 has now abrogated Surah 3:85.  The Trinity is again acceptable before Allah and Christians are going to Jannah.

I suppose this is unfortunate for the Christians who died in the few years where Allah only accepted Tawheed, but Trinitarianism and Christianity are once again in Allah’s good graces.  Muslims like to make a big deal about Tawheed but surprisingly the Quran is willing to let it slide.  Tawheed isn’t relevant anymore.  In fact, when you think about it, Trinitarianism is equally as valid before God as Tawheed.

If the Quran doesn’t require Tawheed for Jannah, Muslims shouldn’t focus on it that much.  After all, the council of Nicaea is on par with the Quran on what is acceptable to Allah; at least when you follow the reasoning of Yusha Evans.  Maybe when I’m in Jannah I can debate Tawheed with Muslims like Muhammad and Alexander the Great.

  1. Brilliant! Clear and simple. Well done.

Is there need for any other verses to demonstrate that the Koran cannot be what it claims to be?

    • Hi Christopher,

I think you’re asking the wrong question. The question should be, does the Quran teach Islam? I’m more and more starting to think the answer is no.

      God bless,
