Matt Walsh Takes the Wrong Approach

Being back home, I’m catching up on a lot of stuff that happened when I was in the Ukraine, including current events.  I knew about the Grand Jury report from Pennsylvania but couldn’t comment on it as I only had an iPad on me and all of my posts were pre-written and scheduled.  I’d like to talk more about theological insights that I picked up in Eastern Europe but I can’t stand by and let Matt Walsh make the wrong argument on such a critical issue.

So in the above video released a few days ago, Walsh seeks to tackle the abuse crisis in the Church from the Grand Jury report from Pennsylvania.  It seems like Ted McCarrick and the CCC change are old news.  They’ve been replaced with this horrific report about large scale sex scandals in Pennsylvania over several decades.  It’s the usual sins of homosexuality and pedophilia by the clergy and the coverup by the bishops.  Shame on every one of these priests.

What does Matt Walsh do?  Well if you listen to the video he says that other groups are just as bad or worse.  He talks about public school teachers, Protestant clergy, hollywood actors, medical professionals and others.  My response to this is: so what?  No one has ever said that these sins are confined to the Catholic Church.  Walsh is upset that the secular media doesn’t focus on it as much.  Well, the question should be, why is Walsh focusing on it?  Catholic priests should be held to a far higher standard than these other people.  I don’t expect anything from these hollywood reprobates. I hold an ordained clergyman in Christ’s Church to a far higher standard than I hold Kevin Spacey or some school teacher spouting leftist nonsense.

I think this comes out of a false belief that I find in many Catholics.  They can’t criticize the Church, especially the clergy.  I see this on almost a daily basis, even when the secular media isn’t talking about the crisis in the Church.  It’s because of this that the clergy has been able to get away with such nonsense for decades.  The bishops and even the Pope need to be criticized on this.  They need to be told to solve the internal problem.  The hierarchy needs to be told to remove as many homosexuals from their ranks as possible as being a priest involves being around children.  The hierarchy needs to be told that if their number one priority if the salvation of souls then they need to form better clergy.  The hierarchy needs to be told to postpone the canonization of Pope Paul VI since he presided over much of these scandals.

I wish Matt Walsh would stop trying to employ a tu quoque when he should be pointing his finger at those who run the institution that we both cherish.  I also think it’s time to break the taboo amongst non-Traditional Catholics of not criticizing Pope John Paul II.  He presided over much of these scandals.  How much did he know?  He probably didn’t know all of it but it’s unreasonable to think that he didn’t know about anything.  How much did he do?  Nothing.  I recently spent two days in Poland.  It’s so inspiring to see how Christian that country is, but sadly they’re uncritical of the man that they cherish from their own lands.  Many saints of the Church criticized the prelates.  It shouldn’t be hard for Matt Walsh to do so as well.  Especially since he has a large following.
