Be Careful Who You Vote For!

It’s been one week since American citizens elected Donald Trump to be their next President and therefore politics is on everyones mind. This blog is not political but I need to share a political experience that I once had.

As Christians, we need to be careful for whom we vote. In my personal life, I am involved in politics quite a bit. In fact, in the last Provincial election, I was a campaign manager for a local candidate. We were the only pro-life party in the province and made sure everyone else knew it. Whether abortion is legal or not is a national issue but the province can choose to cut funding. That was where our platform focused.

We went to all of the forums and events. Since my candidate and I saw the same candidates at each event, we became acquainted with them, their spouses and campaign managers.

My candidate and I found out that our next event was at the local Masonic Lodge. This alarmed us. We are both Catholic and Freemasonry is completely opposed to our faith and the Kingship of Christ. Before going to the Lodge, we brought holy water and exorcised salt just in case.

The event wasn’t in the ritual area but in the cafeteria so we didn’t see anything too scary except the giant Masonic symbol on the floor and a few pictures on the walls. Regardless, we set up our table, put out our literature and engaged people who came by. At one point I told my candidate that I was going for some fresh air.

I went outside and saw the wife of the candidate of the far-right wing party. We talked for a bit then I mentioned that I was Catholic and this place made me feel uneasy. She giggled a bit and told me that her husband was a Mason. My jaw dropped and I was at a loss for words.

About an hour later, things were slow so I went for more fresh air. This time, the Mason himself was out so I politely engaged him. I mentioned that I was Catholic and that the Catholic Church says harsh stuff about them. He then mentioned that his mom was Catholic and he would occasionally attend Church with her when he was a child, though he was never baptized. He mentioned the philanthropy that the Masons do. He also mentioned that every American President was a Mason except for Kennedy, Clinton, and Obama. I asked him if Pope John XXIII was a Mason. He told me that he couldn’t say. I found it odd that he could tell me about which US Presidents were Masons but not if a Pope was.

Later on, this man was elected as the representative of our region. Although his party is not in power Provincially, he holds the seat in this area. I looked him up on Wikipedia and his page doesn’t mention his religious views.

In Scripture we read:

It is good to trust in the Lord, rather than to trust in princes.

– Psalm 118:9

Whoever your elected official is, you must always remember that Christ is King. Politicians come and go. Some are good and some are bad but we always have to remember our true King.

For further reading on Freemasonry, read the encyclical Humanum Genus by Pope Leo XIII which can be found here:
