Debating Evolution With an 18 Year Old Atheist

If you’re going to sell your soul to the devil, make sure you have a good lawyer to write up the contract.

– Dr. E. Michael Jones

Many years ago, I tried to get through The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins.  I couldn’t get through it because it was such a bad book.  In fact, it was one of the worst books that I had ever read.  I normally finish books that I start but I didn’t finish that one.  Many people on both sides of the God debate didn’t like this book and essentially said that Dawkins was leaving his field of expertise.  The man was a biologist after all.

A few years later he came out with The Greatest Show on Earth, which is a supposed defence of the theory of evolution.  Now Dawkins was in his field so he should be lighting the world on fire, right?  I remember how reading this book put several smiles on my face as I read through bad argument after bad argument in favour of evolution.  When I was done with the book I remember thinking to myself that if he’s the best that they have, we have absolutely nothing to worry about.

Last week I was at the mall and I started up a conversation with this young lady who turned out to be 18.  As the conversation progressed, I mentioned that I was Catholic.  She then responded: “I’m an atheist.  I’m scientific and I believe that humans came from apes.”  Now, I truly doubt this pink haired, torn jean wearing girl who listens to rap and had just turned 18 three months ago had properly researched the issue.  I highly doubt that she had read the works of Darwin or conducted experiments in a lab.  Like most people, she believed it because she was taught it in school and everything taught in that classroom is sacred dogma that is not to be questioned.

I then countered her with a question: If humans were originally apes, what animal were they before they were apes?  She asked for a clarification.  I asked her:  What animal became the ape that became human?  Was it a dog, cat, cow, pig, horse or something else?  She then said that she didn’t know.  She was correct, she didn’t know.  She didn’t know anymore than she knew that humans came from apes.  She’s only seen the picture of the ape to human with intermediary sketches in between.  It’s funny how they never do the ape to human image with actual fossils.  It’s always through sketches; they can invent the evidence that they want with a pen, paper and good drawing skills.

Coincidently on the weekend I was catching up on old issues of Culture Wars, which is the magazine of Dr. E. Michael Jones.  I was reading the October 2017 issue which features an article by Dr. Jones called The Rise and Fall of the New Atheism.  It presents great critiques of evolution and how these new atheists always tried to do the rhetorical slight of hand when dealing with evolution.  Many of the arguments are contained in the video above which I recommend to all of my readers.  I also recommend subscribing to Culture Wars.

Now, I know some evolutionists are going to be reading this and will pat themselves on the back by saying that I don’t understand evolution.  Evolutionists, here’s the caveat for you guys:

I know that evolution doesn’t say that humans come from apes.  It says that humans and apes share a common ancestor.  Obviously when I or this young lady talk about apes becoming humans, it’s not the apes in the world today but a sort of proto-ape that lived millions and millions(yawn…) of years ago.  So evolutionists, yes!  I do understand your theory so please dispense with the nonsense.

    • Oh I’m waiting. I don’t know if I have a large atheist readership though. Evolution is probably the easiest debate that we as Christians have.

  1. Im my humble opinion the best (i.e. the most sophisticated) case of atheism against Christianity up to this date is in the peer-reviewed anthologies “The Christian Delusion”, “The End Of Christianity” and “Christianity Is Not Great”, all edited by John Loftus. The first was compiled specifically as a response to critics of Dawkins’ book ” The God Delusion”.

    • Interesting,

I haven’t read any of those. I know who Loftus is. I saw him do an explanation of the Trinity once and it was horrible. I suppose that he’s only edited the books though and not actually written all of them.

How much material in those books deal with evolution?

      God bless,

      Allan

      • “I suppose that he’s only edited the books though and not actually written all of them.”- yep, though he contributed with his own articles.
“How much material in those books deal with evolution?”- well, there is some. For example, Victor Stenger’s article “The Folly of Faith: The Incompatibility of Science” and Richard Carrier’s “Neither Life nor the Universe Appear Intelligently Designed”, as well as Loftus’ “The Darwinian Problem of Evil”.

        • Ah okay.

I’ll have to add it to the list but it’ll be a long way down. I’m focusing a lot on evolution and Islam at the moment. There are very few people promoting positive atheism these days. Most atheists just don’t seem to care. Some, like this girl I mentioned in the post will care a bit but not a lot. I find that religious liberalism is more prevalent. I actually wrote on this a while back.
