James White vs Trent Horn

Who Won?

On January 18, 2017, two top notch apologists debated the subject of “Can a Christian Lose Their Salvation?” The debaters were Catholic apologist Trent Horn and Calvinist apologist James White.  James White has had numerous debates with Catholic apologists and rarely loses against them.  With the exception of Robert Sungenis, I would say that no Catholic has won over half of their debates against him.  He’s good, I’ll say that much.

Exposing the Noahide Fraud

Who are the Noahides?  Over the last 30 years, there has been this movement among Jewish apologists.  They claim that God does not want everyone to be Jewish, however God apparently wants Gentiles to follow seven laws that were given to Noah.  A plain reading of the Bible shows that these laws weren’t given to Noah, however these laws exist throughout the Old Testament.

Evaluating the Writings of James White

The Forgotten Trinity by James White

I’ve criticized James White on several occasions.  The most recent criticism was for the modernist ecumenical dialogue where he discussed religious perspectives with Islamic apologist Dr. Yasir Qadhi in a Protestant Church.  Looking beyond this, I actually admire the man for many of his writings.  I’ve probably read a dozen books by the man and some of them are quite good.  Here are the top three James White books that I would recommend to everyone.

Faith in Bullet Points

You don't always have hours on end to discuss your position.

Justin Martyr who dialogued with Trypho the Jew

We all remember times where we’ve had long faith discussions.  It’s usually hours on end over a meal, coffee, or a glass of wine.  I remember discussing religion over dinner with a Muslim friend of mine from Gaza.  For the first time in his life, he probably doubted his faith that night.  Regardless, we had hours to talk.  We don’t always have that.

Christian Heterodoxy and Emotion

The Heretic James Brownson

Emotion is a powerful thing.  For the last 50 years, people growing up in the West have been taught not to think.  They’ve been taught to go with what feels good.  Sadly, this has spilled into the Church as well.  I just want to say that emotion is not a bad thing, but only bad when it’s alone.  It needs to be coupled with reason, spirituality and rational thought.

James White And The Priesthood

The Double Standards Seem Endless

Dr. White is at it again. Yesterday on the Dividing Line he talked about the development of the Catholic Priesthood. The important part of the above video is at about 19 minutes. He mentions that in the 300’s during the Donatist controversy the question was ex opere operato vs ex opera operantis. He said that no one believed at that time that priestly ordination left an eternal mark on the soul and that this is a later development. I will admit that the theology of the Priesthood developed over time. I have no problem believing that Christians in later centuries knew more about the Priesthood than they did in the fourth Century.

The Faith Of Christopher Hitchens

A Review

IMG_3124

During my University years a flurry of atheist books came out. Sam Harris, Richard Dawkins, and of course Christopher Hitchens came out with polemics against religion. I picked up a copy of God is Not Great and read it through. Hitchens could write really well and he sure could argue. He was not afraid to take any position, no matter how unpopular, even amongst his fellow atheists.
