The Greek Literate Tradition in East and West Contra Islam

In my last post I talked about how Christianity was born in the Greek literate tradition and was able to record the beliefs of the earliest Christians in their sacred texts known as the New Testament.  At the same time I contrasted this with Islam which with minimal exceptions has no documents until the 9th century.  At this point the Muslims probably realized that they couldn’t compete with a literate tradition in the long run.  Either that or some of the literate tradition of the areas that they conquered started to rub off on them.  After all, just because they didn’t accept the Christian religion in areas they were occupying, it doesn’t mean that they didn’t accept other cultural practices and customs and wouldn’t contradict Islam.

When one studies ancient history, we see that the Greeks and the Persians were always at war, similar to how the English and French were always at war during the Middle Ages.  This happened from about 500 BC to the the Arab Conquest of Persia in the 7th Century.

I’ve criticized Jews for Judaism in the past for not really producing any new material.  They seem to get volunteers and members of their community to simply repeat talking points while living off donations from Jews who don’t realize this or know any better.

Mecca isn’t in the Bible

Mecca to Jerusalem. Is this really Psalm 84?

The Quran states that Muhammad is mentioned in the Torah and the Gospel.  Traditionally Muslims have pulled out passages such as the prophet like Moses in the book of Deuteronomy and the Paraclete of whom Jesus spoke.  I’ve spoken of Islamic history as being a polemic against history.  Deep down Muslim apologists are feeling this so they’ve gone beyond the supposed prophecies of Muhammad and have moved on to other things.  One of them is finding the city of Mecca in the Bible.

There’s a coffee shop close to my house where I can be found a couple nights a week.  I’m usually there in the evening reading a book or doing some writing.  I know a lot of the people who work there.  They usually ask me what I’m reading.  It’s usually right before they say that they’re closing and I must soon be on my way.

Many years ago, I tried to get through The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins.  I couldn’t get through it because it was such a bad book.  In fact, it was one of the worst books that I had ever read.  I normally finish books that I start but I didn’t finish that one.  Many people on both sides of the God debate didn’t like this book and essentially said that Dawkins was leaving his field of expertise.  The man was a biologist after all.
