Apologetics And The Current State Of Affairs

Our Lady of Fatima – Who spoke a very unpopular Truth

If one looked at the world between 1900 and 1950 you would see significant differences. In 1900, the Tsar was in power in Russia, the Austro-Hungarian Empire was still alive in Southern Europe, and the Ottoman Empire still existed though it was well past its glory days. By the year 1950, Communists ruled Russia, the Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman Empire no longer existed and a Jewish State existed in the middle East. Russia’s communist errors had spread to most of Eastern Europe, China, and elsewhere. Interestingly enough, only two superpowers existed and both wanted to spread their vision for humanity. Those nations were Russia and America.  Many other changes could be mentioned.

When one looks at the current state of the world we see no powerful Catholic countries. Great Catholic nations had existed in the past. One can think of the great monarch King Philip II of Spain who presided in the days when the Holy League devastated the Turks in the great naval battle of Lepanto. We can look to Poland, Austria, Portugal, and other nations for examples of powerful Catholic nations of the past. No doubt there will be many in the future as well but none for the time being.

Regardless, the worst result of this new order is the spread of relativism en masse. The idea that there is no absolute truth is disturbing and false. Truth exists and that is where apologetics comes in. When a liberal hears of apologetics, they scowl.

To say that there is absolute truth in religious belief is offensive to many. The average religious person today says that his beliefs are okay for him but not necessarily for someone else. To expose this, makes one unpopular. I knew a girl once who said that she respected every ones beliefs. We started talking and realized that I was firm in my beliefs and believed that those who didn’t share them were in grave error. Being a good relativist, she was deeply disturbed and offended. In other words my beliefs are fine as long as I don’t take them seriously.

The modern world endorses the view of this girl. If you go up to a relativist and say you’re an apologist, it usually isn’t a sweet encounter. Why? Because being an ambassador for truth isn’t popular to one who doesn’t believe in truth. So called relativists actually do believe in truth since to state all is relative is a truth statement in itself but that is another topic for another time.

We all need to remember that truth exists and that it is important that we find it. Those who support error are to be confronted and shown the truth so they can join you in the fight for truth. That is the whole purpose of apologetics.

  1. Good reflection! It’s amazing how times change, countries come and go, the balance of power shifts and adjusts, but the Truth remains.

    • Yes, very true. It’s humbling to think that one day our nation of Canada will no longer exist but the Church will outlive it. Quite amazing!
