An Eventful Weekend

A couple months ago my good friend and former roommate got engaged.  Not long after that, he asked me to be his best man.  I was very honoured and agreed.  He got married this weekend and I couldn’t be happier for him and his bride.

The actual wedding ceremony wasn’t until the afternoon.  I had to get up early in the morning to go to the hall and help set up.  We then went to his house, ate some breakfast then I went home for a bit.  In the early afternoon, all of the groomsmen met up at the groom’s house and we got ready.  We all went to the church in one vehicle.

The ceremony was very nice.  It wasn’t a TLM but it was pretty good.  The priest was from the Legionaries of Christ, and although they’re not a traditionalist order, they do really reverent masses.  Probably the hi-light of my day was signing my friends marriage certificate as the witness.  I’ve never done that before but I was happy to witness this marriage as he has longed for this sacrament for a long time.

When we got to the hall, it was party time.  I still had my best man speech but it actually went really well.  When it was over I was relieved because I could just sit back and relax from that point on.  Whenever my friend was in my hometown for some reason, I had always arranged for him to stay with my parents so he could avoid paying for a hotel.  Because of that, he invited my parents to the wedding.  They got to meet a bunch of my friends here in Calgary.

This has made me think a lot about the sacrament of marriage.  As we know, marriage is the building block of society.  First marriage and then the family that follows.  On this day forward, I’m going to be adding couples and families to my prayer requests.  I usually pray for people who I’d like to see become Catholic, whether they become converts or reverts.  I have other prayer intentions as well, but now I’m going to pray for young couples and families that I know.

Jesus Christ did one of his most amazing miracles at a wedding.  He turned water into wine at Cana.  He also taught humanity that marriage didn’t originate with him.  It’s something that goes back to the beginning of the world.

“Haven’t you read,” he replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh?  So they are no longer two, but one flesh.  Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”

– Matthew 19:4-6

I wish all married couples, specifically those recently married, my prayers.  May God watch over you and may you be an example to a world that is hurting.  God bless!

  1. Nice article.

Just noticed (and I really hate to say it because my post is one of appreciation) but I think you have erred in stating “He also taught humanity that marriage didn’t originate with him.” We are taught that all things were created through Him.
