One of the earliest arguments of modern Islamic apologetics that I encountered is that the Quran talks about the development of the human embryo. It talks about the development of the embryo in detail and therefore only God could have authored the Quran. That’s the argument.
Here is the relevant verse that Muslims quote from the Quran:
Then We developed the seed into a clot. Then We developed the clot into a lump. Then We developed the lump into bones. Then We clothed the bones with flesh. Then We produced it into another creature. Most Blessed is God, the Best of Creators.
– Surah 23:14
Obviously if the author of the Quran(Allah according to Muslims) takes the time to talk about the human embryo he thinks that it’s pretty important. I actually agree with the author of the Quran. The development of the embryo is important because it’s the earliest stage of life.
As someone who does a lot of work in the pro-life field, I would appeal to my fellow Muslims to join the fight. I don’t see any reason how they can at least get out of being pro-life based on this Quranic verse. Also, most Muslims really like this verse since they use it to defend their book.
Well, I know that most Muslims in the West are wimps. That’s not an insult, most Christians and Jews in the West are the exact same way. For most of them, their religion is some cheap external garment that does nothing except feed vanity.
I’m not appealing to the wimpy fake Muslims but the true ones. I’d like to see abortion gone from this world. I’d like to see usury gone as well. There is some evil out there that is so obvious that you don’t need to be a Christian to see it.
So how about it Muslims? Are you ready to come out and side with Christians on this issue. A lot of Christians have collapsed on this issue. In a country like Russia, as good as they are in other areas, abortion seems to have become an almost unofficial national sport there. It’s really depressing since Russia is good at combating a lot of other evils.
Although I’m a staunch Catholic, I have no problems working with Muslims, atheists, Jews, and any other type of non-Christian who wants to fight our cause. It’s the biggest evil in the world today. It’s worse than Communist China and North Korea put together. If you’re a true Muslim, stick by Surah 23:14 and join the fight with us.
Unfortunately, despite that verse, I believe there is a long tradition of allowing abortions among at least some of the Sunni schools of jurisprudence, albeit not up to the point of birth, but certainly past the point of conception. The Hanafis are the worst in this regard.
Also unfortunately, Muslims generally seem uninterested or outright antagonistic to prospects of collaboration with Christians, and this doesn’t seem to simply be due to secularization or a lack of belief in their own cause. I can only speculate as to why this might be, but my hunch is that underneath this are some very deep differences in the way that Christians and Muslims view sin, legal systems, and the objective of Religion. This seems to hold true not just on the pro-life issue. For example, many Muslims seem to celebrate the collapse of Christianity in the West, not in spite of the ensuing moral decline, but precisely because of it. Western moral failure is a good thing since it serves to advance the Ummah. Perhaps I am being too harsh, but I simply don’t see this kind of attitude among Christians: your post in fact actually seems to be a kind of proof of this, since you are lamenting the Muslim attitude. These impressions I have are only tentatively held though.
Wow, this was an awesome reflection on that verse form the Quran. Thank you for standing up for life !!
