Christian Heterodoxy and Emotion

The Heretic James Brownson

Emotion is a powerful thing.  For the last 50 years, people growing up in the West have been taught not to think.  They’ve been taught to go with what feels good.  Sadly, this has spilled into the Church as well.  I just want to say that emotion is not a bad thing, but only bad when it’s alone.  It needs to be coupled with reason, spirituality and rational thought.

Several years ago, I was having a discussion with two women and the subject of the death penalty came up.  I stated that I was a firm supporter of the death penalty for certain crimes.  I asked the two ladies what their views were.  One was a firm no, and the other was a firm yes.  I decided to delve deeper with the lady who was for the death penalty.  She said that she used to be against it until her best friend was murdered and she wanted to see justice.

While, I’m glad that she changed her view, she did it for the wrong reason.  I actually find her reason somewhat selfish.  What about when other people’s best friends were murdered?  Did she not think of that?

This type of selfish emotional thinking is rampant today in the Church and orthodox theology is often the victim.  In terms of “Christians” who profess belief in homosexual “marriage”, I’m willing to bet that over 95% have done so because of emotion.  It’s not because of the thoroughly refuted revisionism of Vines, Brownson, Gushee, Helminiak, and others.

Most “Christians” who have had a change of heart on homosexual “marriage” have changed because they’ve had a family member or close friend come out as homosexual.  James Brownson was on record affirming the traditional marriage before his son came out as a homosexual.  All of a sudden the scripture needed to be more closely examined and surprise, surprise, the Bible is pro-sodomy in the eyes of Brownson. The story of David Gushee is somewhat similar but in his case it was his sister. In the case of Matthew Vines, it was he himself who discovered that he was homosexual.

Only after these situations, did those three go back and “re-examine” scripture.  They didn’t look at scripture through unbiased eyes and change their view.  It was all emotion.  With emotion, they could all of a sudden fit a square peg in a round hole when dealing with the scriptures.  Very few people would be impressed with these arguments if looked at in an unbiased manner.  On the other hand, when a close friend has come out as homosexual and one if full of emotion and despair, they’ll grab anything they can to justify their apostasy.  Matthew Vines and James Brownson come in handy for these people because it feeds their emotion.

In Jeremiah 17:9 we read:

The heart is perverse above all things, and unsearchable, who can know it?

In Matthew 22:37, we read the following:

Jesus said to him: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart, and with thy whole soul, and with thy whole mind.

The heart is evil on its own, and that is why it needs to be coupled with the mind and soul to prevent apostasy.  This is something that the West needs to learn sooner than later.
